Ariana Grande's new album "Sweetener" hit stores on August 17, 2018. Almost immediately, fans pushed the album to success on the charts, along with the extremely successful and fan favorite, breathin. The album contains 15 songs, two of which are her recent hit singles, no tears left to cry and god is a woman. Every song contains its own unique, distinctive sound and lyrics. This album was like finally seeing the sun after a long, dark day...and I instantly got hooked. My top three absolute favorites off the album when first listening would have to be breathin, everyime, and better off. Breathin's chorus goes from smooth and soft, to powerful and catchy. The repeating chorus keeps listeners hype, while Ariana's back-up vocals give that unique, powerful addition to the song. Her high notes are something we never get tired of, and they are heard differently in every song, reminding the listener that she is still that Ariana, even though the album itself brought a sound unalike any other album of hers. Better Off has a simple, yet soothing flow that will get you singing soulfully, and it might get you to drop a couple of tears in the meanwhile. Everytime caught my attention through its vague meaning, which is always open to interpretation, making it available to a wide variety of people. The chorus is unique and ear pleasing. Towards the end of the song, Ariana adds powerful back-up vocals that compliment her wide vocal range when singing a song that otherwise wouldn't require much of it. Honorable mentions would have to be Pete Davidson, Get Well Soon, and R.E.M. Although I liked most of the songs on the album, two of them did not attain to my personal liking. Blazed and the light is coming did not impress me as much as the others. Blazed, featuring Pharrel Williams seemed as if she was trying to produce a song that would maybe hit the charts pretty well, I was not a fan of the generic rhythm or lyrics. The light is coming, featuring Nicki Minaj, is declared by me, the worst song on the album. The beat was just not good, it being too 'quirky-like' and a little too corny. It sounded like a video game, and Ariana's voice did not match with it either. Overall, this has to be one of Ariana's best albums yet, most of the songs are dance or sing-worthy, and really do demonstrate Ariana's creativity and variability when it comes to making music. I give it 4 stars.

AuthorMy name is Angela and my life revolves around music. I realized that a song could tell a million stories, even multiple at the same time. My passion for it continues to grow every single day, and I want to share my personal feelings about modern music and my particular taste in it. Another day another song. Archives
